Trekking in the Andes by Amber and Gilles.

My friend Amber and I embarked on a six-day trek through the Andes Mountains. The journey took place between the town of Cafayate and the remote hamlet of Guasamayo Jasimana in the province of Salta, Northwest Argentina. Covering a total distance of approximately 55 kilometres (34 miles), this trek was an expedition of a lifetime, characterised by steep ascents and descents, stunning valleys, and breathtaking sceneries.

The starting point was 5 km (3 miles) from Cafayate, at an altitude of 2000 meters (6560 feet) above sea level. The first three days were marked by steep climbs, where every step seemed to lead to an even greater elevation. Pushing through the rugged terrain we were rewarded with panoramic vistas that seemed to stretch infinitely.

One of the pinnacle of this incredible journey was the moment we reached an altitude of 4350 meters (14270 feet) above sea level. The view from this peak was nothing short of spectacular, offering a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The defining features of this trek was the self-sustained nature of it. Carrying everything necessary, from tents to sleeping bags, food, stoves, maps, and an abundance of water, we were entirely self-reliant. This not only added an extra layer of challenge but also fostered a deep connection with the natural environment.

As our journey continued, we were treated to the sight of some of the most beautiful valleys in the Andes. These valleys exuded an air of tranquility and serenity. Each step brought a new revelation, as the landscape shifted from rugged cliffs to crystal-clear streams.

After 3 days of trekking without seeing a soul, and as we descended onto one of those valleys, the sight of small settlements came into view. The people we encountered were welcoming and the warm reception and the genuine hospitality they extended to us became an unforgettable highlight of our trek, leaving a lasting impression on our hearts.

The six-day trek through the Andes Mountains, from Cafayate to Guasamayo Jasimana, was a transformative experience that will forever be etched in our memories. From the climbs to the breathtaking vistas, to the people we encountered, every moment was a testament to the spirit of adventure. This was not merely a physical challenge, but a profound journey into the heart of nature's grandeur.

Gilles.
